Common questions

How many working hours are in a year?

2,080 on the convention used throughout these pages: 40 hours a week for all 52 weeks, with no unpaid time off. A job with unpaid leave, overtime, or a 35-hour week works out differently, so enter your own hours in the calculator above rather than relying on the standard figure.

Are these hourly rate figures before or after tax?

Before. Every conversion on these pages is gross pay — what the job pays, not what lands in the account. Tax, pension contributions, and insurance all come out afterwards and depend on where you live and your circumstances, which is what the calculator at the top of each page is for.

Why is a month not just four weekly paycheques?

Because a year has 52 weeks, not 48. Four weekly paycheques is one month's pay only in the four months that happen to hold exactly four pay dates. The monthly figure on every page here is the annual total divided by twelve, which is the number that matches a monthly budget.
