The math, with a worked example
Total income = entered income. Each expense = entered amount. Remainder = income − total expenses. With $4,000 income and $3,000 in expenses, the diagram shows $1,000 remaining and how each expense slice compares to income.
Why this matters
A budget spreadsheet hides proportion; a flow diagram shows it. When rent is half your income ribbon you see it instantly, and the remainder ribbon is the number every savings plan starts from. One picture answers where the money actually goes.
Methodology and transparency
The diagram is pure arithmetic: each expense ribbon is its entered amount and the remainder ribbon is income minus the total. Nothing is modeled or projected, so the assumption most likely to be wrong is an expense you forgot to enter — irregular costs like insurance premiums or annual fees belong in as monthly twelfths, or the remainder reads fatter than it is. Everything runs in your browser; no data is sent or stored.
