Pantry Meal Value
Pantry Meal Savings Calculator
What this calculator does
If you can cook from what you already have, the meal cost is the opportunity cost of not buying fast food.
The math, with a worked example
Savings = comparable fast food cost. Pantry ingredient cost is treated as $0 because they are already owned. A $12 fast food meal replaced by pantry food saves $12.
Why this matters
The cheapest meal is the one you already bought. Every pantry dinner that replaces a $12 fast-food run keeps the whole $12, and counting those swaps for a month is usually the fastest 3-figure saving available without changing anything else.
Methodology and transparency
Savings = the fast-food meal price you'd have paid, with pantry ingredients counted at $0 because they're already sitting on the shelf. That $0 is an accounting choice, not physics: correct for this week's decision (the flour is bought either way), wrong for long-run planning, where restocking costs real money — the steady-state saving is the gap between restaurant and grocery cost per meal. Everything runs in your browser; no data is sent or stored.

Common questions
Are pantry ingredients really free?
No, but you already bought them. The calculator shows the marginal savings of using them instead of ordering out.
What about time?
Cooking takes time. This calculator only compares direct food costs.
