Why this matters
A storage unit quietly buys your belongings from you: $75 a month against $500 of stored value passes break-even in month 6, and every month after that you're paying more to keep the items than they're worth. The unit's bill has no memory, but the running total does.
Methodology and transparency
Months to surpass value = stored items' value ÷ monthly fee, rounded down. The input people get wrong is the value estimate: resale value (what the items would fetch today), not replacement cost, is the honest comparison, and it's usually far lower than memory prices it. Run it with your real resale number and the break-even month typically moves closer. Everything runs in your browser; no data is sent or stored.
